Bearded Dragons come from the Land Down Under (also known as Australia) and are native to the semi-arid woodlands and arid rocky deserts of central parts of Australia and, despite their sometimes fierce and wicked appearance, these lizards make quite wonderful pets.

As their habitat might suggest, these large lizards are avid climbers and are known to enjoy basking in the hot sun on rocks and tree branches exposed to sunlight.  Being cold-blooded, once the temperature gets high, above about 100F, they seek cover and bury themselves in the sand and under cover to stay cool and away from direct sunlight.

In their natural environment, Bearded Dragons are both omnivores and diurnal eating live food, such as small lizards and mice, and also plant food including flowers and fruit found in the area.

Pet Bearded Dragon Care

As mentioned above, these lizards can look quite fierce, and can grow to a size that might intimidate some people, but in point of fact these are actually rather gentle animals that have very simple, but quite specific, care needs.  Knowing what not to do is often as important as knowing what to do to raise a healthy and happy, bearded dragon.

Export of these animals is illegal out of Australia, they are captive bred all around the world, so finding one for a pet shouldn’t prove too hard for you, check out your local exotic pet store.
